After having seen people talk about 3 Idiots, I felt my need to say something as well!
Jumping directly into the question(based on the CNN.IBN Face the Nation question): Is the movie 3 Idiots an accurate depiction of the present higher education system in India?....my answer would be:- the question is irrelevent!
Is there a relation between the movie and the education system?... No.
Is ther a relationship between the movie and public entertainment...Yes.
Is this a chance to talk about our depleted education system( elementary to our higher education) (ragardless of what the movie depicts)?...Yes.
3 Idiots according to me is yet another movie which is typically intended to earn money for the producer and entertain the common man.We should not try to glean anything else from it as it provides nothing for the thoughtful people. The credit issue apart, Five point someone was a remarkable book in all senses.Unlike the movie it gives us a feeling of gratefulness towards our esteemed educational institutions and the teachers, also providing us with enough entertainment. We should be thankful for many people who have encouraged such learning systems and processes.
Amir Khan has let down his progressive oriented fans by acting in a movie which does not qualify for his stature. The movie seems to be a complex mixture of Munnabhai, Dil Chahta Hai, Taare Zameen Par and all such movies without their positives!
Chetan Bhagat had had each component(like...emotions, humour, sex, love) of the novel in the right proportions to make it entertaining and thought provoking as well.
Of course our education system needs a revamp....but not through the 'aam aadmi' oriented 3 Idiots, please!
Indians, atleast most of us watch movies purely for entertainment....we like to forget the movie as soon as we come out of the hall. 3 Idiots does not disappoint us in this regard as it provides nothing to carry forward.
As far as I'm concerned I do not want to worry much about the issue whether the movie is inspired or based(or whatever it is called) on the Chetha Bhagat novel. If it is a copy then it is bad that the movie makers have not carried forward the good intentions Chethan intends in the book....and if it was not a copy it is still the same as they have not been able to provide anything for the intellectuals.Vidhu Chopra must be the happiest man on earth now as we fight over a issue which is unconcerned but is all profits to him by all means('bitti' publicity, without any benefits reaching the common man)...probably the common man is paying bucks to Chopra for simply trying to find positives in the movie! The producers might have never thought of this movie as educational at all.
The build up the media is providing regarding this issue is probably not that embarassing as some my think it is, as it is providing us an oppurtunity to go through our education system once again.Though, I'm sure the dust will settle down very soon after everybody has said his say and before anybody has done any good!
My request to my dear friends would be ...why dont we forget the movie and concentrate on moving the education system forward?
I disagree to you to a certain extent. Many a times movies educate us. Also movies of this kind will bring in more public participation in issues. Now that they have showcased the reality in the movie, people and media are talking about it. Nothing may come out of it in the end. But this is just one trigger. All we people need are such triggers. Else you cannot see public participation. Movie is an 'aam aadmi' entertainment. Sigh. Message is important as well! And about the novel you have stated: FPS is a great book. yes. and there are some changes in the story too. So you cannot expect the same thing right out of the book. Also because it is an entertainment, they have to exaggerate the facts. All i say is, lets learn from the positive aspects of the movie and the intent of the message from it. We may build a better system! I am not optimistic though.
ReplyDeleteHmm...I have neither watched the movie nor do I know enough to comment on it. But, as far as your write-up is concerned, if movies, however slightly they may try, can send such messages of change across, it is good for me. Using the power of movies for such causes, while not compromising on their entertainment value is quite a tight rope walk....and at least if the intent comes through, that is fine for me.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, I must watch those idiots sometime....and welcome to blogging!
suicide due to harassment has been well handled in 3 idiots. Imagine same topic, directed by "old is gold" directors! we would have had a gruesome, bucket-filling story of how system screws us up. Todays' generation is impatient and message needs to be transferred efficiently. In this regard the idiots did pass a message which had community relevance..its a big time paisa vasool movie. Yella OK andre..tension yake? Chill maadi..
ReplyDeleteand..welcome to blogging :)
Hi BD, i disagree with you, movie definitely deals with our real higher education system, education system is like rat race to come first always, this discussion is necessary and trigger for furthur changes, change is necessary and inevitable, many of our friends came to medical field by parents pressure and and changed their proffessions once they became independent or they stay in field without sucess, even few have committed suicide for their failure, i think u also would have witnessed all these. Definitely this movie is not enough to change our eucation system as this is age old system and every body accepted it. why can'y a boy or girl choose a profession other than medical or enginerring as they are also professions and there are somany people succeeded in that field. It is important to educate future parents like us to give importance to likes and dislikes of their children and they are not machines to satisfy your egos.
ReplyDeletecertainly debateable .. but i can see where your viewpoint comes from sir .. it is tragic in a way .. aamir khan i am sure s capable of making movies which are more senseful n all that but i think the question is: ARE WE READY FOR SUCH MOVIES? If we chec around us .. we'll realize that if a movie gets a wee bit smart 80% movie goers will lose interest .. they themselves like the masala and the wanton nakedness !! Given that .. Id say that its a nice point that you have but slightly impractical .. Id love to red more on your blog .. Happy new year Sir !
ReplyDeletehello brother. nice one. i watched the movie on a pirated dvd. so do not qualify to judge it. liked the friendship between the three smarties. as far as education system is concserned, it'll start making sense when it no longer remains a "system." what say you? congrats for getting a comment from our fat bottomed aiyyangari.deep apologies sorry for making your chaddi dost sound like a lab utensil!
ReplyDeleteIt's very simple. Aamir has done his job to make his movie a superhit and to stay on top in the industry.
ReplyDeleteWhat the crap are you talking about education or entertainment ???
For CB it shouldn’t matter if its said to be derived or not because every person seeing the movie knows that its pure inspiration from FPS. So CB should not bother if credits are his or not. But there has been lot of thoughts and ideas put on by RH .Due credit goes to him for making a wonderful movie.
ReplyDeleteRegarding any movie have an impact over society or not? I feel it does have. Though not profoundly visible unless you have extreme cases like”shaktimaan”, the good/bad things in the movies get embedded in young minds and would though not fully but partially influence lifestyle.
Movies need not be labeled “time pass” or “for entertainment only”. Every kind of movies entertainment, inspirational etc would be a good recipe for mind.
Hari
Hey friends,
ReplyDeleteI'm extremely happy for getting all your comments, though most of you do not agree with some of my views atleast!.
For me, this was sort of a get-together kinds, as friends from different periods of my life have come together to express their opinions here.
The response a movie produces, as we all know, is very much subjective.I believe there were no right or wrong views here for the same reason. The only thing all of us are concerned despite our different opinions is that a movie has to produce positive thought processes in whatever ways its possible in.
I'm not closing the discussion or comments section here, comments are welcome anytime!
Thanks Srik,NS,Suggala,Loki,Viren,Mourner(I will be happier if you please come up with your real name!),Anna and Hari once again.
